Dance Source Houston Artist-in-Residence Program


Dance Source Houston’s Artist-in-Residence program is open to Houston dance artists of all genres. Artists are selected based upon their desire to push themselves and their art to new levels by taking risks and maximizing their time in the residency. The residency culminates with performances of the work created during Barnstorm Dance Fest.

The three dancemakers selected to be Dance Source Houston’s 2019-2020 AIRs are Joel Aguilera, Roberta Paixão Cortes, and Rivkah French. Read the press release announcing this season’s cohort here.

Residency artists will receive:

  • Up to 70 hours of rehearsal space at a Houston area studio
  • Access to professional development workshops
  • Production and marketing plan assistance
  • Individual artist grant application assistance
  • Shared performance opportunities

Residency artists will be required to:
  • Attend workshops and meetings with other resident artists
  • Attend and participate in monthly Fieldwork sessions
  • Execute deadlines on production/marketing plan, press release, project budget and other residency related documents
  • Complete a Support for Artists and Creative Individuals and/or Let Creativity Happen grant application through Houston Arts Alliance
  • Create 15-20 minutes of new work by the end of the residency term
  • Be available for tech/production week for culminating performances

The residency runs September -June. From September-December 2019 AIRs meet monthly with the DSH staff to work on artist statements, grant applications, budgeting, and production planning, as well as attending professional development workshops. From January-June 2020 have access to up to 70 hours of rehearsal space at one of our AIR partner facilities. The residency culminates with presenting the work developed by the artist in Barnstorm Dance Fest.

Eligibility
To be eligible for consideration, artists must –
  • be a dancemaker at any stage of their career,
  • be a current Dance Source Houston member,
  • be located within the Greater Houston region,
  • be available for cohort meetings, and
  • not have previously been a DSH Artist In Residence.
