Frequently Asked Questions

What is the mission of Barnstorm Dance Fest?

The mission Barnstorm Dance Fest is tied to the mission and vision of Dance Source Houston – to nurture and support contemporary dance artists, the organizations that present them, and to identify and build audiences for contemporary dance in the greater Houston area.  Our goal is to provide local artists low cost, high production value performance opportunities and to offer audiences a quality sampling of diverse work.  Creating an equitable platform for presentation is a key value of the festival.

Who can submit to the festival?

All genres are encouraged to apply.  The festival was created to showcase the breadth and depth of dance in Houston.  In the past we have received applications from a variety of genres including ballet, belly dance, Bharatanatyam, contemporary, flamenco, hip hop, jazz, modern and performance art.

Applications are open to artists who are not Houston area residents.  Dance Source Houston feels that featuring a limited number of out of town artists each year helps to foster an exchange of ideas between other cities and states that does not happen often enough.  The inclusion of non-local artists enriches the experience for local artists and audiences alike.

Can works in progress be submitted?

Yes, works currently in development may be submitted to the festival.  To ensure your application is easily understood by the curators, detail the trajectory of your work in progress along with the description of the work.  The application allows for two work sample links.  One is required and must be of the proposed work.  The work sample does not need to be of the completed work, but must show that the work has been initiated.  The second work sample can be of past work.  Describe each work sample in the provided blank and feel free to guide curators to a specific time in the video.  Please do not include promotional reels.

Is there an artist stipend?

Yes, each selected work will receive a $250 stipend.  Checks will be written to the main contact noted on the application, unless given other instructions.

How is the festival curated?

Applications are curated by a panel of 3 judges.  Previous panels have included Lauren Anderson, Rachel Cook, Matthew Cumbie, Marlana Doyle, Xandra Eden, Harrison Guy, David Lake, Michelle Ramos, Jenni Rebecca Stephenson, Sixto Wagan, Helanius Wilkins and Nancy Wozny.  After applications are scored by panelists individually, the panel meets with the DSH staff to filter their results through the mission and vision of the festival to ensure an accurate representation of the Houston dance community is presented based on the applications received.
