The Meadows Division of Dance at Southern Methodist University invites applications for a three-year renewable Assistant Professor of Practice in Modern Dance and Choreographic Studies. The division seeks an artist with a solid foundational modern technique and/or aesthetic with a proven body of choreographic work and ability to teach all levels of modern dance technique and dance composition and choreograph on the BFA dance students for the main stage productions. Additional teaching experience in dance for camera, somatic based practices, and experience in theoretical studies are welcome. The division seeks candidates who share a dedication to transformational pedagogies and artistry, as well as the performing artist grounded in the versatile studies of ballet, modern and jazz techniques. This is a Professional and Teaching faculty position. While it is not eligible for tenure, it has a three-tier promotion path and opportunity for long-term (five-year) contracts which may, at the top rank (Professor of Practice), be renewed annually contingent on job performance. Professional and Teaching faculty’s primary responsibility is teaching, though courses may be substituted by significant service roles. Additional service may include academic advising, recruiting, student mentoring, and other departmental service as needed, and will be negotiated based on teaching load and departmental needs. Creative work and research are not expected, though they may be rewarded.
