The annual Day of Dancer Health provides Houston-based dance professionals 18 and older with access to health screenings from a variety of healthcare providers. The screening, developed by Dance/USA’s Taskforce on Dancer Health, includes a review of exercises and healthcare recommendations by physical therapists and medical doctors. Event attendees also have access to one-on-one consultations with nutritionists and psychotherapists.
We recognize that many individuals must take off work, set up childcare, and navigate transportation issues to make attending a priority. Attendees who complete the screening are eligible to receive a $50 stipend following the event to help offset these obstacles.
The event is free and open to any dance artist based in the Greater Houston region. Registration is offered first come, first serve, through appointment timeslots. Spots are limited.
Thank you to all of the incredible volunteers from Memorial Hermann Rockets Sports Medicine Institute who make this event possible, and especially our co-organizers Nicole Baker, Dexter Upton, and Hallie Kou!
Contact us at [email protected] if you have any questions or would like to participate in the 2025 event as a clinician volunteer.
Quotes from past DDH attendees:
“Many dancers do not have access to health insurance or therapists through our jobs, so having a resource like this is incredibly impactful. Also, just knowing something like this exists here, makes me feel seen and valued as a dancer.”
“The physical assessments were specific to dancers which, I find, is uncommon.”
“I don’t have very much access to healthcare and so this way I feel like I’m advocating for myself and my body as a dance practitioner, and I can prioritize the longevity of my practice.”
“If I want to consult, for example, a nutritionist, which was the most valuable part of my Day of Dancer Health Day, I would need to work an additional 3 hours at my highest rate to pay for it. “
“At every station, the healthcare professionals were encouraging. Their help in identifying problem areas and offers of different physical therapy exercises was invaluable to me.”
