The Baroque-Carnatic Connection’ is a cross-cultural exploration of the commonalities and distinct flavors of Western baroque and South Indian classical music and dance traditions.

A vibrant and interactive live musical conversation between world-class Carnatic and baroque musicians provides an unique auditory experience, with a striking visual dimension added by professional South Indian classical ( Bharatanatyam) and Baroque dance ensembles, embellished by period costumes and jewelry.
Join us in this unique artistic conversation bridging eastern and western classical dance and music from the Baroque era!

This project is conceptualized and directed by Lavanya Rajagopalan, with the choreographic input of Catherine Turocy, music direction by Abhishek Balakrishnan, and featuring dancers and musicians from Silambam Houston along with guest performers from the New York Baroque Dance Company, Apollo Chamber Players, and Roopa Cultural Arts Center.

The performance features musicians Abhishek Balakrishnan (Carnatic vocal and violin), Naga Srinidhi Kuruvada ( mridangam), Janhavi Murali (Carnatic vocal and cello), and Lavanya Rajagopalan (nattuvangam), Matthew Detrick (Baroque violin), Matthew Dudzik (Baroque cello), and Jesús Pacheco (Baroque percussion), as well as lead dancers from the Silambam Houston Dance Company and the New York Baroque Dance Company.

Silambam Houston was founded in 2002 by Dr. Lavanya Rajagopalan, for the promotion and development of the arts, to impart artistic education, and promote young talent in the performing arts. They seek to increase the appreciation and understanding of Indian artistic traditions across cultural boundaries, through comprehensive arts education, outreach, and exceptional arts programming, and by creating opportunities for young artistes to develop, perform, and collaborate.
