Join Basket Books for a conversation with Clare Croft, editor of the Essential Jill Johnston Reader and author of Jill Johnston in Motion: Dance, Writing, and Lesbian Life. Clare Croft will be joined by dance artists and choreographers Adele Nickel and Andee Scott.
Clare Croft is a dance historian and theorist, as well as a dramaturg and curator. She is the author of Dancers as Diplomats: American Choreography in Cultural Exchange (Oxford, 2015), a study of the U.S. State Department’s sponsorship of international dance tours as a form of cultural diplomacy. She is also the editor of the book and website Queer Dance: Meanings and Makings (Oxford, 2017), a collection of essays by scholars and artists. In connection to this volume, Croft also curates the EXPLODE: queer dance project.
Adele Nickel trained on scholarship with Oregon Ballet Theater, the Joffrey School and the San Francisco Ballet before moving to New York, where she was a member of the Liz Gerring Dance Company and was nominated for a 2013 Bessie Award. From 2015-2017 Adele assisted choreographer Annie-B Parson working with Grammy Award-winning rock musician St. Vincent. She received an MFA at University of Washington and performed with Chamber Dance Company (CDC) in Seattle. Adele is currently an Assistant Professor of Dance at Sam Houston State University.
Andee Scott is an interdisciplinary artist with a primary focus in dance. As a choreographer, Scott’s areas of interest include technology, site-specific design and aerial work. Recent pieces include, Light Interrupted, The Shape of White, Portrait and Silo/Solo. She holds an MFA in Dance and Related Arts from TWU and degrees in Dance and German from The University of Texas. Scott is currently Associate Professor of Dance at Texas A&M University.
Clare Croft and Andee Scott are currently touring “The Invitation Situation” by Alpert Award-winning choreographer Jeanine Durning, an ongoing dance-theater project made for and with Andee Scott, Mary Williford-Shade, Heidi Brewer, and Clare Croft, performing at MATCH on March 30 and 31.
