Since 2015, Open Dance Project has been combining the best of contemporary dance and physical theater to make boundary breaking performances praised as “hands down the most polished and potent dance theater [work] to come out of Houston in the last ten years” (Nancy Wozny, Arts & Culture TX) and applauded “for reminding us that art is essential, not a luxury, to maintaining our humanity,” (Molly Glentzer, The Houston Chronicle). Under the artistic direction of choreographer/performer Annie Arnoult, ODP’s diversely talented dancers bring to life elaborately constructed worlds that invite audience members to enter, interact, explore and feel something real. Over the last ten years, audience members have been serenaded by Bertolt Brecht in Weimar Berlin, shared a Coke with Clyde Barrow at a diner counter, and looked over the shoulder of Georgia O’Keeffe as she sketched a long winding path on her drawing pad. We tell real stories in the most creative and engaging way we know how – a commitment that has earned us a reputation for being “Houston’s source for truly innovative immersive dance,” (Tarra Gaines, CultureMap). Alongside our site specific, immersive, and proscenium performances, ODP’s no-cost or at-cost community performances, school touring shows, and audience engagement workshops have ensured that people of all ages and backgrounds in Houston have greater arts access - serving more than 105,000 people over our first 10 years.
