Dr. Sunanda Nair - Short Bio
Dr. Sunanda Nair is a celebrated Mohiniattam exponent, acclaimed globally for her artistry, and dedication to classical arts. She is the seniormost disciple of Padmabhushan Dr. Kanak Rele and a torch bearer of her guru’s legacy. For over four decades, Dr. Nair has established herself as a celebrated performer, accomplished choreographer, thoughtful curator, and dedicated teacher. Her performances reflect a rare combination of tradition, spirituality, and innovation resonating with audiences of all ages and cultures. She has also trained in Bharatanatyam under Gurus: Kalaimamani Mahalingam Pillai, Kalaimamani Kadirvelu Pillai, Shree Deepak Mazumdar, Guru T.V. Sounderajan, and is currently under the guidance of Padmashri Chithra Visweswaran. Dr. Nair also trained in Kathakali with Kalamandalam KrishnanKutty Warrier.
A pioneer in dance education, Dr. Nair was the first student in India to obtain Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Mohiniattam and was a lecturer at Bombay University for a decade. Dr. Nair is the founder of Sunanda’s Performing Arts Centre and has trained numerous dancers who uphold the tradition of Bharatanatyam and Mohiniattam in India and the diaspora.
A true cultural ambassador, her journey is not just that of a dancer, but of a leader, nurturer, and visionary. Her work has won her several awards, recognition, and honors.
