The Pilot Dance Project presents an original dance and music collaboration spearheaded by Executive and Artistic Director Adam Castan͂eda. Purple Bromeliads is inspired by the science-fiction work of N.K. Jemison and Octavia E. Butler, as well as the stunning tropical shapes and colors of the bromeliad. The dance explores the interactions and mood of a community under environmental threat, and the beautiful, yet devastating reactions of the natural world to human activity. “Bromeliads bring me a lot of joy when I have them in my home garden,” says Castan͂eda. “The can momentarily take you to a different time and place because they are so unusual, and stand in stark contrast to other popular houseplants. I’m also a huge fan of speculative fiction, and admire so much the world-building that these writers undertake for their creations.” This new dance work will be accompanied by an original score by celebrated Houston musician Anthony Almendarez. He will be joined by fellow musician Gabriel Martinez. The work is costumed by Ashley Horn, and will be danced in front of animation by Ceci Norman, creating a grand cinematic experience for the Miller Outdoor Theatre stage. Purple Bromeliads will premiere as part of the Bayou City Dances dance festival.
