Founded in 1997, Hope Stone Dance (HSD) celebrates its 25th season of artistic excellence. To sustain relevance for a quarter-century is to be in unique company in Houston’s arts community. Woven into the city’s arts fabric 25 years ago, Founder and Artistic Director Jane Weiner brought a new energy to Houston’s modern dance scene. As the only choreographer in town with a stint in a New York City company under her belt (as a founding member of the Doug Elkins Dance Company), she had the chops after her ten plus years of performing and touring the world, to craft and become an authoritative storyteller of evening-length works.
Twenty-five years later, the work of HSD can still be described as “intellectually challenging, profoundly human and fresh with humor.” Employing the best of Houston’s professional modern dancers and training them to be collaborative partners in the creative process, HSD is also recognized for its continual collaboration with Houston’s arts organizations and dancers – Mercury, Houston Boychoir, Houston Metropolitan Dance Company, Houston Ballet, Stages, and in a variety of the city’s venues.
