Long Description

M. Gabriela Estrada is a multicultural dance artist, educator, choreographer, journalist, and filmmaker committed to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion. She holds a B.A. and an M.F.A. in Dance from the University of California, Irvine, and a Ph.D. in Flamenco Interdisciplinary Studies from the Department of Sociocultural Anthropology and Philology at the University of Seville, Spain.

Her M.F.A. and Ph.D. research, publications, and creative work analyze reciprocal influences between ballet and flamenco derived from interdisciplinary collaborations, as in Ballets Russes' Tricorne. Examples of her work include choreographic advocacy initiatives such as Not a Single Carmen More!, the historic memory reparation documentary film ENI9MA: The Legend of Félix, the feature-length screenplay False Premises, and the book titled The Choreographic Development of The Three-Cornered Hat Through the 20th Century written in English and Spanish.

Estrada is an Assistant Professor of Dance at the University of Houston, where she is developing choreographic research on José Limón's Spanish dance repertoire and collaborating with UH's Opera as co-choreographer for Ainadamar. Estrada continues collaborating with Flamenco Vivo as a flamenco studies translator and engaged with Ballet Hispánico, where she has been faculty in the School of Dance and Education Manager for its community engagement program.

Estrada is a National Dance Education Organization (NDEO) Advisory Council Research Advisor, a member of the Dance Studies Association and the New York Women in Film Association, an active participant in Columbia University's Seminar on Dance History, and a collaborator with Sundance Collab as Community Advisor for emerging filmmakers and screenwriters.
